RSA Arts Network

showcasing arts based activity and ideas

During my residency in Wales I came across an exhibit at a place called Danger point. As part of their exhibit they show children how to pack a flood kit to keep ready at home. This made me realise that flooding is becoming more and more of an every day reality. I have started to give out sand bags to artists, so that I can create a large artistic flood defense. If anyone is interested in decorating a sand bag please let me know. I am also interested in any flooding/water/sea issues. Thanks.

I'm slightly alarmed by the idea of teaching children how to pack a flood kit. It seems a little apocalyptic...
Yes, I suppose it is, but flooding for some children in various parts of the country, including the coast of north wales is and will be a reality. Obviously some people think it is important to teach children how to cope in the event of flooding. Why are you alarmed?
I've probably got the wrong end of the stick about what you're doing, but while I think it's incredibly important talk to children about climate I'm very aware that there are different narratives going on... There is a strand of apocalypticism in a lot of climate change art. Personally, being on the Eeyore-ish side, I'm all for it, but I worry about how that is communicated to children.

There are obviously practical issues about flooding we can discuss with children, but I'm just concerned about how we engage their imagination with climate without turning climate change into a kind of bogeyman, a monster lurking under their beds.

Having been a weedy, timorous child myself, I think packing a flood kit might have sent my imagination into a nose dive of terror.
